Psychological Dimension of Filmmaking

The study aims to identify the key mechanisms of the psychology of creativity, through which the author’s psyche and his artwork interact. The study is divided into subtasks. The analysis of artistic and psychological influences will be made: the motive of the creative act, the author’s fantasies and the specifics of their realization, the author’s emotional experience of his work, self-determination within a particular tradition, the characteristics of the filming process, etc. The basic research methodology is the in-depth interview.

My name is Aliaksander Martyniuk. I am the director of the Short Movie Club and Nefiltravanae Kino Film Festival, which celebrated its 9th anniversary last year.

There are chances I have watched one or more of your short films that you sent to our festival if you read this text

During my time working on the festival, I have reviewed thousands of films, compiled dozens of section programs, held several film studies conferences, and, most valuable to me, personally met a huge number of filmmakers.

I have heard your thoughts and insights. I have heard your concerns and aspirations. I found common themes with you and was amazed at how unique each of us is.

And I would love to write a book about it. And it’s not just a book, but a research project on the psychology of creativity. And about the changes that occurred in me during my communication with filmmakers from different continents.

We have made a little Google-form with questions for you together with my fellow psychologist Alexander Polubinsky.

Hope that, your answers will not only help in writing the book, but they will also be of interest to you. I’m pretty sure you’ve rarely been asked these kinds of questions.

Those filmmakers have noted a sort of therapeutic effect of this conversation who have taken this survey.

Moreover, the answers helped them take a closer look at their work and at themselves.
