As theorist Paul Wells notes, animation’s “metamorphic potential” allows it to destabilize fixed meanings, rendering complex themes—from environmental collapse to existential alienation—through allegory and whimsy. Animation, unbound by the constraints of live-action realism. It can thrive as a medium of radical imagination and ideological subversion. Ideologically, animation’s inherent artifice enables filmmakers to critique power structures, reimagine identities, and satirize societal norms with a freedom live-action often cannot risk.
This program showcases works that weaponize animation’s plasticity: some embrace minimalist design to distill human experiences into universal gestures, while others deploy hyper-detailed surrealism. Unlike conventional cinema’s reliance on photographic indexicality, animation revels in its constructedness, inviting viewers to question both the art form and the realities it mirrors.
