Redefining Cinematic Narratives in a Fractured Totality

XI Nefiltravanae Kino curates a mosaic of cinematic forms to interrogate contemporary existence, where fragmented realities and systemic power structures demand new storytelling paradigms. Across programs like Foreigners In Universe and Human & Algorithms, films employ glitch aesthetics, non-linear narratives, and hybrid media to critique technological, ecological, and ideological systems—echoing Hito Steyerl’s “poor image” and Gilles Deleuze’s “time-image.” The festival navigates tensions between tradition and experimentation:  Horror section rejects imitation, Walls and Sounds dissects language’s dual role as bridge and barrier, and Leviathan’s Dreams contextualizes personal trauma within socio-political violence. Even the Belarussian collection, though regionally focused, contributes to a broader dialogue on identity under pressure.

By embracing dissonance—algorithmic alienation, ecological extraction, mental health stigma—the festival positions cinema not as escapism but as a mirror and disruptor. It proposes that storytelling’s evolution lies in its ability to hold contradictions: linearity and fragmentation, control and resistance, individual and collective. Here, film becomes a site of inquiry, urging viewers to question not just what they see, but how they see, in a world where visibility is both weapon and refuge.
