MOUTH OF TRUTH
Barbara Vekarić (Croatia, 18 min)
Many teenage girls struggle with their appearance, and the more they scrutinize their perceived flaws, the more they alienate from the world and waste most precious years of their lives by devoting so much energy to their appearance. Mouth of Truth explores the defensive mechanism that teenage girls build to protect themselves from the judging peers and shows how far they are willing to to go to fit in and be accepted. The message I want to send to my audience is: Nobody is perfect. The main character – Stefani – suffers from body dysmorphia that blocks her from being relaxed with her friends and the boy she likes. Although she poses as the confident one, secretly she is horrified and hurt by careless comments and hostility. Her body isn’t fair game. No one’s is, no matter their size, color, gender identity, and there’s a place for us all in popular culture to be recognized as beautiful.
